How to use 과/와 (gwa wa) in Korean — "and; with"

How to Use

Used to join two nouns or to say you did something together with someone.

Rule: After a noun ending in a consonant, use 과 (책과). After a vowel, use 와 (커피와). This pair sounds written or formal; in everyday speech use 하고 or (이)랑.

Examples

김치와 밥을 먹었어요.

I ate kimchi and rice.

친구와 같이 갔어요.

I went with a friend.

한국과 프랑스는 달라요.

Korea and France are different.
