How to use 커녕 (keonyeong) in Korean — "let alone; far from"

How to Use

Used to say that not only the bigger thing but even the smaller thing was impossible.

Rule: With nouns it appears as 은커녕 after a consonant (밥은커녕) and 는커녕 after a vowel (커피는커녕). With verbs, use -기는커녕 (쉬기는커녕). The second clause is always negative.

Examples

여행은커녕 쉴 시간도 없어요.

Far from traveling, I don't even have time to rest.

칭찬은커녕 혼났어요.

Instead of praise, I got scolded.

밥은커녕 물도 못 마셨어요.

I couldn't even drink water, let alone eat.
