Watching the Budget

I closed the shopping app before I could tap buy. "I'm saving up for a trip this year," I said. Skipping that one purchase felt oddly great.
The price tag made me put it right back. "I can't afford that right now," I admitted. She nodded and we walked on by.
She reached for her wallet, but I waved her off. "Put that away dinner's on me tonight," I said. She promised to get the next one.
The check landed in the middle of the table. "Let's just split the bill evenly," I said. Everyone agreed and tapped their cards.
The little bottle of water cost a fortune. "Eight dollars? That's a total rip-off," I said. We found a shop down the block instead.
