Most writing systems were not designed. They drifted — pictures became symbols, symbols became letters, and the result carries thousands of years of accidents. English spelling is what happens when nobody is in charge.
Hangul is one of the few exceptions. It was created deliberately, by a known person, for a stated reason, in a documented year.
The problem it was built to solve
Before 1443, Korean was written with Chinese characters. Korean and Chinese are unrelated languages with completely different grammar, so this worked badly, and learning it took years. Literacy was effectively restricted to the aristocracy.
King Sejong's stated motivation, in the preface to 훈민정음, was that ordinary people who had something to say could not write it down. The system he and his scholars produced was explicitly designed so that, in the text's own words, a wise man could learn it in a morning and a fool in ten days.
That is an unusual design brief for a writing system, and it shows in the result.
Consonants are diagrams of the mouth
The five base consonant shapes copy what the speech organs do.

Make the sounds while looking at the letters. ㄱ and ㄴ in particular are close to cross-section drawings.
Strokes carry meaning
This is the part linguists find genuinely unusual. In most alphabets, a letter's shape says nothing about its sound — there is no reason p should look like it does. In Hangul, similar sounds look similar, and the difference between them is a consistent visual operation.
Add a stroke, add a puff of air.
ㄱ → ㅋ · ㄷ → ㅌ · ㅂ → ㅍ · ㅈ → ㅊ
Double the letter, tense the sound.
ㄱ → ㄲ · ㄷ → ㄸ · ㅂ → ㅃ · ㅅ → ㅆ · ㅈ → ㅉ
So you are not memorizing 19 unrelated shapes. You are memorizing five diagrams and two rules.
Writing systems where the shape encodes phonetic features like this are called featural, and Hangul is the standard example. Very few others exist.
Vowels are built from three marks
The original vowel system used three elements with a stated symbolism: a dot for heaven, a horizontal line for earth, a vertical line for a standing person.
Combine them and you get the vowels. The dot became a short stroke in modern printing, but the logic survives — ㅏ is a vertical line with a stroke to the right, ㅓ has it to the left, ㅗ has it above the horizontal, ㅜ below.
Add a second stroke and you add a y: ㅏ → ㅑ, ㅜ → ㅠ.
Syllables are packed into blocks
Rather than running letters in a line, Hangul groups them into square syllable blocks. 한 is three letters in one block.
This was partly practical — Korean text sat alongside Chinese characters, which are also square — but it has a real reading benefit. Korean grammar attaches endings to the ends of words, and block structure makes those endings visually obvious in a way a letter string would not be.
Where the praise gets overstated
Hangul is well designed. It is not magic, and a few claims that circulate online are not true.
Spelling and pronunciation do not always match. 한국말 is written with ㄱ and pronounced with an ng. 좋아요 loses its ㅎ entirely. Korean preserves the underlying form in spelling and lets sound rules apply in speech, which is a reasonable choice but means you cannot read purely by letter.
Homophones are common. Because Korean has many words borrowed from Chinese that sound alike, Hangul alone sometimes cannot distinguish them, which is why Chinese characters still appear occasionally in legal and academic writing.
UNESCO did not name it the world's best alphabet. What exists is the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, awarded for literacy work, and the 훈민정음 해례본 manuscript is registered in the Memory of the World programme. Both real, neither a ranking of alphabets.
What this means if you are learning
The practical takeaway is that Hangul rewards understanding the system over memorizing items. If you learn the five base shapes and the two stroke rules, the other letters arrive almost for free. If you try to brute-force 40 characters as flashcards, you are doing more work than the system requires.
