There's no staff to ask. It's just you and the machine.
The exchange
이거 어떻게 사용하는 거야? i-geo eo-tteo-ke sa-yong-ha-neun geo-ya? "How do you use this?"
If your friend has been before, that's all you need to say. They'll take it from there:

Then you reach for the screen:

How it works
Most booths follow the same sequence, and the screen walks you through it step by step.
1단계 — 배경 고르기 (bae-gyeong go-reu-gi) — Pick your background
Solid colors, seasonal themes, minimal gradients. Some booths have licensed character options. Scroll through and tap the one you want.
2단계 — 촬영 (chwal-yeong) — Shooting
A countdown appears — usually 3 or 5 seconds — then the camera fires. Most booths take 4 to 8 shots in a row with a short pause between each. The screen shows a preview after each one.
3단계 — 꾸미기 (kku-mi-gi) — Decorating
Add stickers, text, or frames. This is optional and time-limited — a timer counts down in the corner. You can skip it if you want clean photos.
4단계 — 인화 (in-hwa) — Printing
Pick how many copies you want. Standard is one strip of 4 photos, but many booths let you choose 2 strips (one to keep, one to share). Payment is here if you haven't paid at the start.
Useful phrases at the machine
다시 찍을 수 있어요? — "Can we retake it?" Some booths allow a retake before the print is confirmed. Look for 다시 찍기 on screen.
인화가 안 나와요 — "The print isn't coming out" Say this if something goes wrong. Most booths have a QR code or number to contact support.
몇 장 나와요? — "How many photos come out?" myeot jang na-wa-yo?
Tips that aren't obvious
Pay attention to the timer during decoration. Most people run out of time before they finish adding stickers. Either decide fast or go minimal.
The lighting changes by booth brand. 인생네컷 tends toward warm, soft lighting. 포토이즘 (Photo-ism) is known for brighter, more high-contrast results. Try both if you're particular about how your photos look.
The strip prints in about 30 seconds. It comes out of a slot at the bottom or side of the machine. Don't walk away — it's easy to forget and leave your photos behind.
Booths are everywhere. You'll find them in shopping malls, near subway exits, and on busy shopping streets. Hongdae and Myeongdong have the highest concentration in Seoul.

- Pay at the start if the machine asks — most are 4,000 to 6,000 won for one strip
- Pick your background first — scroll before you commit
- Watch the countdown and look at the camera, not the screen
- Move fast during the decoration step — the timer is short
- Wait by the print slot — your photos come out in about 30 seconds
