There are always too many options, and everyone has an opinion.
The exchange

The backgrounds
Most booths offer three types.
단색 (dan-saek) — solid colors. Clean and simple, works for any outfit. White, beige, and pastel tones are the most popular.
계절 테마 (gye-jeol te-ma) — seasonal themes. Cherry blossoms in spring, snow in winter. Changes every few months.
캐릭터·콜라보 (kae-reok-teo·kol-la-bo) — licensed characters or brand collaborations. Costs a little more at some booths, but the options are unique.
Useful opinions
These come up every time:
이게 더 예쁘지 않아? — "Isn't this one prettier?" 이건 좀 별로야 — "This one's not great" 그냥 이걸로 하자 — "Let's just go with this one" 시간 없어, 빨리 골라 — "We don't have time, hurry up and pick"
That last one is the most useful. The machine gives you about 30 to 60 seconds to choose, and it goes faster than you think.
When you genuinely can't decide
반반 어때? — "What about half and half?"
Some booths let you split the strip — two shots with one background, two with another. Not all booths offer it, but it's worth checking the options screen.
그냥 랜덤으로 하자 — "Let's just go random"
Some machines have a random pick button. Tap it and whatever comes up is what you get. Surprisingly fun.
What to actually do
- One person drives — too many hands on the screen slows everything down
- Scroll through all the options once before committing
- If you're split, go with the simpler background — busy backgrounds compete with your faces
- Say 그냥 이걸로 하자 when someone won't stop scrolling
- Once you confirm, the countdown starts immediately — get into position fast
The background matters less than you think once the photos are printed. The lighting and your expressions do most of the work.
