Ask a Korean where to spend a warm evening and a surprising number will say 한강. Not a bar, not a restaurant — a lawn by a river with convenience store food and a rented mat.
It is also one of the easiest social situations to join, because almost nothing has to be arranged in advance.
What actually happens
You pick a park — 여의도, 반포, 뚝섬 are the popular ones — buy or order food, sit on the grass, and stay until it gets cold.
The two things that make it work are convenience stores inside the park and delivery drivers who will find you on a lawn.
Renting a mat
There are vending machines that dispense 돗자리 (picnic mats), usually for a few thousand won.
- 돗자리 어디서 빌려요? — Where do I rent a mat?
- 돗자리 있어요? — Do you have mats?
Convenience stores in the park sell them too.
Ordering delivery to a lawn
This is the part that surprises visitors. Delivery apps let you set a Han River zone as your address, and drivers meet you at a marked pickup point.
- 배달 되나요? — Do you deliver here?
- 어디로 가면 돼요? — Where should I go?
Fried chicken is the default. 치맥 — 치킨 plus 맥주 — is the standard combination and the word is used constantly.
Phrases for the evening
- 자리 잡았어요. — I've got us a spot.
- 여기 앉아요. — Let's sit here.
- 다 같이 있어서 좋아요. — It's nice being here all together.
- 야경 진짜 예뻐요. — The night view is beautiful.
- 좀 추워요. — It's a bit cold.
That third one is the sentence that fits the situation best. Han River evenings are less about the view than about the group.

Many parks have coin-operated ramyeon machines that cook the noodles for you. Add that to a mat and a convenience store and you have a full evening without leaving the lawn.
Cleaning up
Bins are placed throughout the parks and people generally use them. Leaving trash on the grass is noticed.
